A change in style
As a crocheter and a designer, I’ll be the first to admit that my main love is amigurumi, especially small amigurumi. Most of my patterns and projects are a testament to that, and little crocheted animals and people fill my girls’ bedrooms and the shelves all over my house. However, slowly over time I’ve felt the need to make wall-hangings. I love my first two patterns and thought that I had settled on ‘rectangle’ as an appropriate wall-hanging shape. And everything was fine, until it wasn’t.
The ‘Bee Kind’ idea had been brewing in the back of my mind for months. I was so excited to turn it into a wall-hanging, especially for my eldest daughter. There has been so much going on over the last couple of years as she continues to move towards her teenage years, there has been drama in her friendship groups, secondary school on the imminent horizon, and she is growing in awareness of the world and some of the more unsavoury headlines that have recently been in the news. And it’s a lot to deal with. So, I wanted to make her a reminder of the importance of kindness, to be the good that the world needs.
I must have made over eight different versions of the wall-hanging, and I was thoroughly disappointed with each one. Finally, I had a revelation, how about a circle shape? I had a play around with an old wire hoop that was supposed to be a Christmas craft that never got made and fell in love with the results.

In the end, I made two in different colours, one for her bedroom and one for my dining room. I love that the centre-piece works up so quickly, and that it is a low sew project. The crochet piece is made all in one go, and the only sewing part is when you attach the sweet little bees to the ruffle.
It looks lovely in her room, and my eldest is very pleased with the design. So, I’ve turned it into a crochet pattern, so that you can also make it for the special child in your life (or maybe just for yourself). I also created a cute little bee friend to go with the design, and you can find the free pattern for that here.
I hope you have as much fun making it as I did designing it. Now, I must say goodbye, my youngest has pointed out that it is now her turn to get something. So, back I go to the drawing board to work out what to make her next.

“This pattern is easy to read and understand. I would recommend to anyone! I would classify this pattern as an advanced beginner pattern due to some of the complexity of the special stitches such as the bobble stitch. Overall I loved this pattern!”
