The Christmas Birth of a Butterfly

Last Christmas, I was on a mission to create something special for my two daughters; something they will cherish for their rooms. I adore making them gifts that are handmade and heartfelt. So, I got out my trusty sketch book, made myself a warm, tasty hot chocolate, and started capturing ideas. After another cup of hot chocolate (or two), inspiration finally struck: butterfly wall hangings!

I envisioned delicate butterflies, each unique in colour and personality, just like my girls. One in a bold rainbow of colours, to match my youngest’s bold vibrant spirit. The other, in shades of blue changing from dark to light to dark again, reflecting my eldest’s cool, artistic spirit.

I raided my yarn stash to find the perfect colour combinations. Then, armed with yarn, my trusty crochet hook, and a sprinkle of Christmas magic, I brought the butterflies to life. I mixed bobble stitch with single/double (US/UK) crochet stitches to create the colour and texture that I was after.

Finally, after a few attempts, I got the right shape for the butterfly. It took a while, but it was worth it. The joy on their faces when they unwrapped their personalised gifts was truly heart-warming. Seeing the butterflies hanging proudly in their rooms, adding a touch of nature and the outdoors to their room, fills me with immense satisfaction.

But the story doesn’t end there. The crochet pattern was so quick to make, I ended up making several more of these butterfly wall hangings, for the girls to give to their friends throughout the school year. They were so fun much to make that I wanted to share the pattern with you, which is why you will find this butterfly wall hanging below as a free crochet pattern! So grab your crochet hook, pick your colours and join me in making a kaleidoscope of butterflies.

I hope you enjoy making it as much as I enjoyed designing it. Happy crocheting!

This is an intermediate level crochet pattern, suitable for those who are comfortable with the basics of crochet and are ready for their next project.

Size

The finished Butterfly Wall Hanging is approximately 5.5 inches wide by 6.75 inches long (approx. 14 cm wide by 17.5 cm long).

Materials

  • You can use any DK or light weight yarn (other yarn thickness can be used – this will result in a different size).  I have used the following Stylecraft Special DK yarn:
    • Candy Floss 20g, 59m / 64.5 yards (yarn A)
    • Wisteria 10g, 29.5m / 32.5 yards (yarn B)
    • Black 5g, 15m / 16.5 yards (yarn C)
    • Aspen 10g, 29.5m / 32.5 yards (yarn D)
  • 2.5mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • 2 wooden rods approx. 0.25 inch wide by 6 inches long (6mm wide by 15 cm long). I chose to cut a 30cm rod into half and paint both the rods white using acrylic paint

Special Techniques

Bobble stitch (bo): Also known as DC5TOG (US) or TR5TOG (UK)

  • The bobble stitch is worked with the wrong side of the fabric facing you, making the bobble pop out on the right side of the fabric.
  • Short explanation: Work 5 dc/tr (US/UK) all into the same stitch, leaving the last loop unworked on the hook each time. When you have 6 loops on the hoop, yarn over and pull through all 6 stitches.
  • Detailed instruction: [Yarn over, insert hook through both loops of the next stitch, yarn over, draw the yarn through the stitch, yarn over, draw the yarn though 2 loops on the hook] five times, yarn over, draw the yarn through all 6 loops on hook.

Notes

  • Are you new to crochet? Here is a handy post explaining all the abbreviations.
  • I have used US crochet stitch terms for this post. Check out this US to UK stitch conversion guide if you prefer to work in UK stitches.
  • Work in rows, turning after each row.
  • The pattern is crocheted from the bottom of the wall hanging upwards.
  • To change colour, work last stitch of old colour to last yarn over. Yarn over with new colour and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Continue with new colour.
  • Carry the non-working yarn across the row on the wrong side of the fabric when changing colour, working over the strand every few stitches with the working yarn to maintain a neat appearance.
  • Do not carry the non-working yarn up the rows, fasten off the yarn at the last colour change of each row, and re-attach at the first colour change of the next row.

Edging

Using yarn A, with the right side of the wall hanging facing you, crochet a border around the edge of the entire rectangle with 1 sc in every st or row, and 3 sc in the corner stitches, sl st to close.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Blocking (Optional)

If you wish, block the panel so that it is approx. 5.5 inches wide by 6.75 inches long (approx. 14 cm wide by 17.5 cm long). For detailed guidance see my blocking tutorial.

Wall Hanging Assembly

Check out my How to Assemble Your Wall Hanging tutorial for detailed guidance on assembling the wall hanging.

If you choose to attach a fringe, use 29 stands of yarn A, all approx. 8 inches (20 cm) long. Using 1 strand at a time, attach in every single/double crochet (US/UK) of beginning row. Trim fringe to desired length.

And there you go, I hope you enjoy making your Butterfly Wall Hanging using this free butterfly wall hanging crochet pattern. It’s a unique wall hanging that adds delicate beauty to whatever room it is in.
